Local Family Files Salmonella-Related Lawsuit

David and Sarah Kirchner of Belle Plaine, Minnesota have filed a lawsuit against the Blakely, Georgia peanut company responsible for the recent outbreak of salmonella in contaminated peanut products. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of their two children, Michael and Lilly, who fell ill from the bacterial ailment over the Christmas vacation. Michael, 3, who contracted salmonella from peanut butter crackers, spent three days in the hospital. The brand of crackers was later listed among those recalled. Lilly, now six months old, probably contracted the illness from her brother. Both children suffered painful diarrhea and other potentially dangerous symptoms.

The lawsuit against the Peanut Corporation of America seeks unspecified damages, claiming negligence on the part of the company. Dozens of additional suits have been filed against the company, which filed for bankruptcy last week. The company also faces criminal charges. Other companies that used peanut products from Peanut Corporation of America might also be found liable for damages in the nationwide outbreak.

As a parent, you always hope the food you provide for your children is safe. When this proves disastrously untrue due to the negligence of a large corporation, you’re left feeling helpless and betrayed.
