Tainted Foods Produced in U.S.
At the direction of senior officials at S.K. Foods, L.P., a food processing plant headquartered in Monterey, California, Jennifer Lou Dahlman ordered the distribution of tomato paste that was misbranded with labels indicating lower than actual levels of mold and higher than actual levels of tomato solids. During her statement, made in Sacramento Federal Court she admitted to distributing tomato products for more than three years knowing that they were “unfit for food.”
Other FDA recalls include numerous products with possible melamine contamination. Melamine is a chemical used in plastics, glue and other non-edible products. Despite being toxic to humans, it has been used to increase protein content of foods that otherwise do not meet FDA nutrition requirements. But what is it doing in biscuits and candy–not your usual protein sources? Some recent recalls include:
• National Brands, Inc. Topaz Wafer Rolls.
* Four varieties of Interfood Shareholding Company’s The Wonderfarm Brand of Biscuits.
• Walgreen’s is recalling 173 nine-inch Dressy Teddy Bears with 4-oz. chocolate bars that may be contaminated with melamine.
• Everlasting Distributors, Inc. Fresh and Crispy Jacobina Biscuits were distributed to Asian markets nationally.
