ACQUIRE Therapy Helping Brain Injury Patients in Birmingham

An 8-year-old girl suffered a brain injury when she was six months old. An abscess in her brain resulted in cerebral palsy. She was unable to feed herself or pick up a paperclip at age four. This young girl has made great strides in her therapy thanks to the ACQUIRE therapy program. She now able to feed herself and pick up small objects.

ACQUIRE is a therapy program created by a behavioral neuroscientist and his colleagues at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. This therapy was first used with adults suffering from traumatic brain injury and stroke patients.

Cerebral palsy (which sometimes results from a medical mistake during delivery) affects the movement and coordination of the muscles. AQUIRE therapy focuses on improving changes in the motor behavior of the muscles and the brain. In the case of this young girl, her weak arm was trained in developmental tasks while her stronger arm was restrained. This allowed her to focus on her weaker arm resulting in amazing improvement.
