Nursing Home Resident Attacked by Mice
A bedridden resident at a nursing home was attacked by a pack of mice. The 89-year-old man had parts of his ears torn off in the incident. He also suffered severe bites on his head and a wound to his throat. When the nursing home staff found him, his hands were completely covered in blood from trying to get the mice off of him.
The attack was a result of a mouse infestation in the area that was not properly handled by health officials. This tragic incident could have been easily avoided had steps been taken weeks ago to curb the influx of mice to the area. By the time of the attacks, the problem had gotten completely out of hand.
The nursing home has brought in crews to handle the situation. Mouse traps are currently being emptied on an hourly basis and the cleaning staff is constantly wiping up mouse droppings across the facility. Other residents are currently being relocated while the problem is taken care of.
Nursing homes have an obligation to ensure that residents have a safe environment in which to receive the care they require. When a facility fails to provide for the safety of its residents, it is guilty of nursing home abuse and may be held liable for damages caused to injured residents.
