Monorail Operator Dies in Collision at Walt Disney World
The investigation into the cause of Walt Disney World's first fatal accident in its monorail's 38-year history continues today. Two monorails collided over the holiday weekend near the Magic Kingdom. One of the rail's operators was pronounced dead at the scene; the other operator was not injured. Passengers were medically evaluated following the collision, but no injuries were reported.
The monorail transports thousands of Disney visitors every day, taking them all over the large resort area. The monorail is now shut down pending the investigation.
The name of the young man who died is Austin Wuennenberg, a computer science major at Stetson University scheduled to graduate in 2010. He was a monorail pilot since October 2009.
A former monorail pilot interviewed after the deadly collision stated that the monorails are equipped with an anti-collision system that automatically stops trains when they get too close to each other. Obviously, with such a system in place, something went wrong.
