New Study Indicates 1 in 3 Breast Cancer Patients Receive Unnecessary Treatment
A study conducted by researchers at the Nordic Cochrane Centre in Copenhagen has found that one out of every three breast cancer patients identified by public screening programs may be receiving unnecessary treatment. Their study analyzed data from five countries.
According to the study, many instances of cancer detected by these screenings may grow too slowly to ever cause serious symptoms or lead to death. For these women, it is best to not undergo cancer treatment, since many treatment methods cause harmful side effects in patients.
The results of this study fuel an ongoing debate in the medical community as to whether or not mass cancer screenings are in fact helpful to the population. For many years, there has been a similar debate about prostate cancer screening for men, since many instances of prostate cancer also grow too slowly to ever affect the patient.
As a result of this wide scale misdiagnosis of breast cancer, many women have been subjected to treatments that have caused psychological scarring and left them physically ill. If you have been unnecessarily treated for breast cancer, you may be entitled to receive compensation for your damages in a medical malpractice claim.
