Causes of Spinal Cord Injuries
Our spine is a crucial part of the human machine: it is the
system that carries signals from our central command center, the brain, to all
other parts of the body. When the spinal cord is injured, the result can be
anything from disabling chronic pain to paralysis to death. Because it is so
important, the spinal cord is enfolded in a protective layer of bone, the
vertebrae and the discs that separate them to allow flexibility.
Unfortunately, the bone and cartilage of the spine is often
not sufficient to protect the spinal cord from injury. The most common causes
of spinal
cord injury in the US are:
Motor vehicle
accidents--up to 40% of all spine injuries are caused by motor vehicle
accidents
Falls--about 25% of all spine injuries are
caused by falls. Spinal cord injuries due to falls are more common in the
elderly
Violence--violence, especially gun and knife
violence, causes up to 15% of all spinal cord injuries
Recreational injuries--contact sports, street
sports, and diving in shallow water cause about 8% of all spinal cord injuries.
In addition, alcohol and drugs are a factor in about 25% of
all spinal cord injuries. It's important to remember that not all spinal cord
injuries involve damage to the vertebrae.
If you have suffered a spinal cord injury due to another
person's negligence, we may be able to help you get compensation for your
injury. Please contact
