Montgomery Executive Convicted of Insurance Fraud
An insurance executive from Montgomery, Alabama was convicted on February 17th of embezzlement, 23 counts of mail fraud, and of filing false insurance reports with the state. The possibility of civil or class action litigation regarding these charges is not yet clear.
John Goff’s former company handled workmen’s compensation insurance. Charges stated that he collected fees for insurance, but never gave the money to the insurance companies, leaving his clients uninsured. He then allegedly diverted these monies, amounting to several million dollars, to fund his own extravagant lifestyle.
Goff’s defense claimed the insurance companies owed money to Goff, and stated disappointment that the case was not settled in what they felt to be a more amicable fashion. Goff also claimed the conviction was simply the result of a long-term attempt by rivals to drive him out of the insurance business. His lawsuit against the supposed rivals was thrown out last year.
Goff’s attorneys plan to appeal the conviction.
Unfortunately, this kind of fraud is all too common. If you suspect you have been a victim of fraud, it’s important to have experienced, qualified attorneys on your side to ensure proper restitution.
