Oil Spill Hits Louisiana Shore; State of Emergency in FL and LA
The governors of Louisiana and Florida have both declared states of emergency as the oil from the BP oil spill last week reaches shore. The oil well was torn apart on April 20, 2010 by a blast that sunk the oil rig; at the time of this writing, eleven people are presumed dead from that blast as bodies have not yet been found.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist declared a state of emergency in six Florida counties today:
• Santa Rosa
• Escambia
• Walton
• Okaloosa
• Bay
• Gulf
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal reports that Venice and Port Fourchon, Louisiana will be hit first by the oil spill.
President Obama has ordered Interior Secretary Ken Salazaar to "conduct a thorough review" of the Deepwater Horizon rig blast and oil spill. Salazaar is to report back on how to prevent such accidents from happening in the future within thirty days. The President has also sent teams to the Gulf Coast region to inspect deep water oil rigs and their platforms to evaluate their safety and address any concerns.
The oil spill is a huge threat to the environment. As the oil oozes into Louisiana marshland, birds can be seen covered in oil; the oil threatens approximately 400 species of other animals, also.
As property is destroyed, insurance claims will be filed. If property is destroyed by an environmental disaster such as an oil rig explosion and subsequent oil spill, then you may be entitled to compensation for your losses. An experienced maritime/admiralty attorney can help.
