McDonald’s Recalls 12 Million Shrek Glasses
Earlier this morning, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that McDonald's was voluntarily recalling 12 million Shrek-themed drinking glasses nationwide. The recall was prompted by a discovery that the glasses contained levels of cadmium in the paint which may prove hazardous to children.
The 16-ounce glasses were sold for $2 each at McDonald's restaurants in an attempt to promote the movie Shrek Forever After. There were four different glasses being sold depicting several of the main characters in the movie. McDonald's has announced that it will post further details regarding refunds for the glasses next week on its website.
The CPSC has warned consumers to stop using the glasses at once. The danger posed by these glasses involves long term exposure to low levels of cadmium, which may be absorbed from the paint onto children's hands. The cadmium can then enter the body if the child places the contaminated hand into his or her mouth.
Recent research has indicated cadmium is a carcinogen. Furthermore, it may result in bone softening and kidney problems.
A spokesman for McDonald's claims the glasses are perfectly safe; however, they were recalled as a precautionary measure.
