Surgeon Narrowly Avoids Medical Malpractice Claim
A surgeon at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island averted disaster and most likely prevented a medical malpractice lawsuit in the process. The oral surgeon started operating on the wrong part of a patient's mouth. Fortunately, he realized his error in time and was able to perform the correct procedure on the right part of the patient's mouth.
The surgical team reported that the surgery was ultimately a success and the patient is in good condition. No complications are expected as a result of the initial surgical error.
Unfortunately, this was not an isolated incident. There have been five reports of wrong-site surgery in the last two years at the Lifespan hospital chain, which Hasbro Children's Hospital is affiliated with. The state Department of Health is currently investigating the incident at Hasbro.
Doctors have a responsibility to administer a level of care to their patients that is commensurate with the standards of the medical profession. When they fail to do so, they are guilty of medical malpractice and should be held accountable for their actions. If you suffer severe injuries as a result of a doctor's negligence, you may be eligible to receive compensation for your damages.
In this particular case, the surgeon noticed his mistake in time to prevent serious injury and an accompanying medical malpractice suit. However, this does not excuse his actions. It is unacceptable for a surgeon to operate on the wrong part of a person's body.
