Why Would I Get a Stiffer Sentence?
At The Cochran Firm, our criminal
defense attorneys understand that we need to treat
every case with the importance it deserves. There are no shortcuts in
the law, and your criminal case is too crucial to be dealt with in a
one-size-fits-all manner.
Sentencing statutes vary from
state-to-state and municipality-to-municipality. Our criminal defense
attorneys will be familiar with how your local court system decides
on the length of sentences.
However, there are some broad
sentencing guidelines that most courts share in criminal
cases. As a general rule, you might be subjected to a
longer sentence if:
- You were on probation at the time of the alleged crime
- You have a past criminal history, especially with similar charges
- You were in possession of, or used a, weapon during the crime
- The crime took place near a school
There are other, far less reputable and
thoroughly unofficial factors that tend to produce harsher sentences.
Sadly, racial minorities tend to face stiffer sentences than white
defendants charged with the same crimes, and media attention can
pressure judges and prosecuting attorneys to push for harsh
sentences.
The Cochran Firm’s criminal defense
attorneys are committed to providing you with a spirited defense, as
you are entitled to under the Constitution. We’ll be your advocate
at every step of the process.
