Train Accidents

Even though trains are one of the oldest modes of transportation in this country, they are not outdated. Trains are a still a high-occupancy, low cost mode of travel, as well as a very inexpensive way to ship freight across the country. Also, due to the increasing cost of fuel, more and more people rely on trains to get to and from work every day.

Trains are an irreplaceable transportation source in this country, but just like any other mode of transportation, accidents do occur. Trains carry thousands of people, or tons and tons of cargo, and because of their sheer weight, train accidents are always catastrophic. Both cargo trains and passenger trains travel at high rates of speed as well, increasing the devastation caused by an accident.
There are many causes of train accidents, including:

• Derailments
• Improper train or railroad maintenance
• Driver fatigue
• Driver negligence
• Unmarked railway crossings
• Driver inexperience

A prime example of how catastrophic train accidents can be is the collision that occurred in September of 2008 in Los Angeles, California. The driver was actually sending a text message on his cell phone when the train collided with a freight train, resulting in the death of 24 people.
